Precise location information: GPS Surveys

Our GPS surveying services are appropriate if you are interested in precise location with respect to a national mapping system (Ordnance Survey National Grid in the UK) or if your site covers a very large area.

What is GPS?

GPS (Global Positioning System) is a satellite-based positioning and navigation system owned and operated by the US Department of Defense. It is one of a number of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in operation, which also includes the Russian GLONASS system. In simple terms, these satellite systems work by receiver devices locking on to signals being transmitted from the satellites. By using these signals to calculate the distance to each satellite, the device is able to triangulate its position. The accuracy of a computed position is dependent on the number of satellites being observed, and their relative positions in the sky.

GPS Surveys

We use the latest GPS surveying technology to accurately measure position, usually integrating this with our other services.  For example, where you require a 3D laser scan survey or topographical survey to be connected to Ordnance Survey grid and datum.

Rather than directly measuring the absolute position of a point, GPS surveying techniques use a measurement of the distance and bearing between two receiver devices. This baseline can be measured to an accuracy suitable for surveying applications. By having one receiver at a known position (the base station) it is possible to determine the position of the other receiver (the rover) with a typical accuracy of +/-20mm in plan position and +/-30mm in height.

GPS surveying is suitable for activities such as large topographical surveys, engineering surveys for civils/infrastructure projects, asset data collection and control network surveys.  We would be delighted to discuss with you how GPS surveying could benefit your project.
