HOUSE OF THE YEAR 2015: The Flint house

November 27, 2015

The prestigious Royal Institute Of British Architects (Riba) award, the house of the year 2015, has been awarded to The Flint house by Architects  Skene Catling de la Peña.

RIBA huose of the year 2015

The RIBA House of the year 2015, which replaces the previous title ‘RIBA Manser Medal’ was created in 2001 to celebrate excellence in housing design.

The project, commissioned by Lord Rothschild for use by his family, is 6,200sq-ft is located in Buckinghamshire. The house has step-style roofing rising out of the ground and is clad (unsurprisingly) in pieces of flint.

“This is a rare example of a poetic narrative whose realisation remains true to the original concept.”

This years competition was broadcast by the popular Channel 4 TV program Grand Designs as part of 4 part special mini-series dedicated to the RIBA House of the year 2015.

According to the architects, it was important for the house to celebrate the countryside so they dipped it in native Buckinghamshire flint. The pieces of flint are arranged by colour to create a tonal gradient across the structure and are a direct reference to the flint-filled soil and chalk that make up the local landscape.

The judges commended that Flint House is ‘a marvel of geological evolution and construction’ and the RIBA president remarked: ‘I am delighted that Skene Catling De La Pena’s Flint House for Lord Rothschild has won this year’s prize. ‘Although superbly original and unique, it continues a fine tradition of RIBA award-winning houses that provide exemplars for others’.
