An evening at the House of Commons: Chicks with Bricks

January 13, 2015

Spatial Dimensions attended a construction event with a difference, at the House of Commons this week, Chicks with Bricks.

Chicks with Bricks is a proactive network that connects young women in the construction industry to their female peers and role models.

The event held on Wednesday evening at the House of Commons was a celebration of women in the built environment.

An interesting feature of the attendees was that only 12% of the audience were male. This is because the organisers only allowed that number as a reverse representation of the gender split of the workforce in the UK Construction industry.

Chicks with Bricks founder Holly Porter opened proceedings. Other speakers included , the Director for Surface to Air Architects. The Rt. Hon. Nicky Morgan MP, secretary of state education and minister for women & equalities. Meg Munn MP a former minister for women and equalities.

Incoming RIBA president Jane Duncan also spoke and launched a global social media campaign aimed at encouraging women into the construction industry. The #SeemeJoinme campaign will be used on social media during international womens day on the 8th of March..

You can see even more photos from the evening on our Facebook wall, feel free to like our page while you are there!

Spatial Dimensions Managing Director, Claire Fenwick commented “Another inspiring evening by Chicks with Bricks at a truly iconic building. I’d would recommend any professional women in the construction industry who haven’t been to a Chicks with Bricks event to get involved.”

Chicks with Bricks operates as a non-profit network. Any profits raised from the event will go directly to helping young, disadvantaged women ‘get into’ construction through the Prince’s Trusts ‘get into’ programmes.
